MGUS Intro

MGUS Myths and Facts

MGUS is “Asymptomatic”

MYTH – Currently doctors focus on monitoring progression to Multiple Myeloma. When they say “no symptoms”  It is no symptoms for progression (CRAB), but there are actually a number of related diseases that are documented: peripheral neuropathy, osteoporosis, DVT, etc.

MGUS is a disorder of the elderly

NOT ENOUGH DATA – Most of the screening studies where performed on patients 50yo or older.

Only 1% of MGUS progress to Multiple Myeloma

PARTIALLY TRUE – This is an overall statistic, on a set of randomized people, some of them showing no symptoms at all.
It would be interesting to see studies showing progression after MGUS diagnosis of people complaining of some symptoms. Also, the rate of evolution seems to be very individual depending on many criteria: MGUS subtype, FLC ratio, Antibodies level, etc.
